PRESS RELEASE

7 MARCH 2020

HAWAII SAYS NO MORE EXPANDS ITS EFFORTS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DIRECT SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS AMIDST BUDGET CUTS AND INCREASED NEEDS DUE TO COVID PANDEMIC.

HONOLULU, Hawai‘i – Seven years ago, a group of 15 of Hawai‘i’s leading government agencies and non-profit organizations, along with the media, companies, schools, elected officials, advocates, influencers and survivors, launched Hawai‘i Says NO MORE, an unprecedented state-wide effort to increase awareness and visibility to prevent and end domestic violence and sexual assault.

Since then, Hawai‘i Says NO MORE has raised awareness about this violence across the state and encouraged public discussions to break the silence, shame, and stigma surrounding these issues.

The core team of organizations behind Hawai‘i Says NO MORE include Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, Child and Family Service, Hawai‘i State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women, Hawai‘i Youth Service Network, Parents and Children Together, Department of the Attorney General, Department of Human Services, PAU Violence, the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Office of Gender Equity, the University of Hawai‘i System: Office of Institutional Equity, Women Helping Women, and YWCA Oahu.

Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week, which runs March 7-13, 2021, includes efforts and events across the state.

Every day in our state more than 500 victims seek support from domestic violence programs. One in seven women are survivors of sexual assault. that's 67-thousand women. And yet these crimes are severely underfunded, under-researched, misunderstood and often on the margin of public concern. For too long, we have relied on those who have experienced violence to be the brave ones to speak out, stand up, and demand change. It's time for all of us, especially now, to step up.

During the covid-19 crisis, the need for domestic violence services has significantly increased while direct service organizations have suffered cuts to critical domestic violence services funding. These organizations are being asked to do more with less and the safety and wellbeing of survivors and their children is at stake. Go to hisaysnomore.org and make a tax-deductible donation to our front line HSNM Beneficiaries - Parents and Children Together, Child and Family Service and Women Helping Women.

In honor of Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week, Honolulu Hale will light their building the NO MORE blue color all week. Mayor Rick Blangiardi and Governor David Ige have formally proclaimed the second week of March as Hawai‘i Says NO MORE Week.

Governor Ige’s proclamation reads, “we encourage residents to support the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault in our community and to extend deep appreciation to Hawai’i Says NO MORE for creating a culture of safety, equality and respect.”

Mayor Blangiardi proclaimed, “Hawai‘i Says NO MORE is committed to employing our unique cultural and community values of aloha, pono and ‘ohana in its efforts.”
